The Association of Anglican Musicians (AAM) announces its 2010 Commission Competition sponsored by the AAM2010 Conference Committee and AAM member, Louise Temple-Rosebrook. Sample compositions are requested from female composers for consideration as a commissioned composer for the AAM National Conference to be held in Hartford CT in June 2010. The selected composer will be commissioned to write a new choral anthem, on a specified text, for performance during the conference. The winner will also receive $1000 cash prize.

Application Deadline: Application packets must be postmarked/e-mailed no later than Sunday, January 31, 2010. The competition winner will be selected no later than March 1, 2010.

Award: One winner will be selected to receive the following:

  • $1000 in US funds
  • Performance at 2010 Hartford AAM Conference
  • Publicity related to the competition and conference

Eligible Applicants: All female applicants are accepted regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or veteran status.

This competition aims to identify a talented female composer and support her in the creation of a new choral work to be premiered at the Association Of Anglican Musicians (AAM) Conference in Hartford, CT, in June 2010.

CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY
The Association Of Anglican Musicians Commission Competition is open to female composers regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or veteran status.

ITEMS TO SUBMIT—PAPER APPLICATION

  1. A completed online application form
  2. Three (3) work samples, that demonstrate your current compositions
  3. Compositions may be for any ensemble
  4. It is recommended that composers include work samples that indicate skills appropriate to write for choral ensemble, with or without instruments, and that works demonstrate recent compositional activity
  5. Include date of composition on each score
  6. Do not send original manuscripts. Entries printed using music notation software (such as Finale® or Sibelius®) are encouraged. Legibly handwritten entries are also acceptable.
  7. Recordings of the representative works (optional but strongly recommended). Although this is optional, audio may assist the initial assessment of works. This may be an acoustic recording or a MIDI rendering; the quality of performance or MIDI rendering will not be judged. Only CDs will be accepted.
  8. A short biography (no more than 250 words)
  9. A works list
  10. Application fee of US$20 payable online, or by check or money order, payable to AAM Hartford 2010 Conference.

File Formats for Electronic Applications

  • Musical Scores: PDF files only. Notation files will not be accepted.
  • Prose Documents: PDF files preferred. Microsoft Word format (DOC) is also accepted.
  • Audio Files: MP3 files preferred. Shorter pieces may also be submitted as WAV or AIF files.

The following submissions will be disqualified:

  • Late entries
  • Incomplete entries
  • Illegible copies

Materials must be submitted on or before Sunday, January 31, 2010. Applications materials (typically PDFs and MP3s) should be sent to competition@aamhartford2010.org after the online application form is completed. Late applications will be disqualified.

APPLICATION FEES
Application fees of US$20 can be paid:

Application fees are non-refundable and will not be returned to those disqualified for not meeting the requirements herein.

COMPETITION PRIZE
The winner will receive a prize of US$1000. Payment will be in US funds only. Half of the prize will be delivered initially and half upon successful completion and delivery of the new work. Prize monies will be subject to applicable tax laws and it the responsibility of the winner to properly report the prize.

PARAMETERS OF NEW WORK
The winning composer will be engaged to create a new choral work for the AAM Hartford 2010 Conference. The new work must meet the following criteria:

Essentials

  • Unaccompanied or with organ accompaniment
  • 3-5 minutes in length
  • no more than 6 vocal parts with limited divisi
  • limited or no solo vocal material

Text
The text for the new piece will be selected by the competition administrators.

Deadline
The new work must be completed and delivered no later than May 15, 2010.

RETURN OF MATERIALS
No materials submitted for this competition will be returned.

ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL
The winner is encouraged to attend the AAM Hartford 2010 Conference, as well as any rehearsals for the performance of the commission.

JUDGING
The applications will be examined by a Jury chosen by the AAM Hartford 2010 Conference Committee and will include two professional choral musicians. Members of the Jury may not enter the competition. The Jury’s decision is final and may not be appealed. The AAM Hartford 2010 Conference Committee, at the advice of the Jury, reserves the right not to award the prize.

Procedure

  1. Upon receipt: all applications—paper and electronic—are reviewed by the competition coordinator for completeness.
  2. Round 1: As applications are completed, a preliminary and internal review of applicants’ work samples is conducted.
  3. Round 2: Shortly after the competition deadline, the complete Jury independently rates applicants’ work samples and new work proposals.
  4. Round 3: In mid-February, the Jury convenes and reviews all remaining applicants’ complete applications (work samples, proposal, bio, works list). From this set, the Jury selects a winner and identifies any applicants deserving of “honorable mention”.

PUBLIC DISCLOSURE
The Association of Anglican Musicians will publically announce the names of the competition winner and “honorable mentions”, if applicable, during March 2010. The names of non-winners will not be made public and will be held in strict confidence. Composers whose works do not win the prize will be informed no later than April 2010.

RIGHTS TO EACH PARTY
The following rights will be given to the AAM Hartford 2010 Conference before disbursement of prize monies:

  1. The AAM Hartford 2010 Conference will have exclusive performance rights through July 1, 2010.
  2. The AAM Hartford 2010 Conference reserves the right to record the work in perpetuity.
  3. The following dedication must appear just above or below the title of the work in all manuscript and published editions:
    • Commissioned by The 2010 Conference of the Association of Anglican Musicians, and premiered June 2010, Hartford, CT.
  4. The AAM Hartford 2010 Conference will have the right to make copies for distribution to the choir/performers.
  5. The winning composer will be asked to provide biographical information and a photograph for publicity purposes. The AAM Hartford 2010 Conference will have the right to use the composer’s photo, name, and composition title in future AAM communications without fees.

The following rights are retained by the winning composer:

  1. Copyright ownership
  2. Publication rights
  3. [The composition may not be published prior to July 1, 2010.]

    In the event that a sponsor is found for the Competition, and consequently the name of the prize is changed, the composer agrees to use the new name, as above.

    LIABILITY
    Although every effort will be made to protect and safeguard all manuscripts and recordings, neither the AAM Hartford 2010 Conference nor anyone connected with this contest will assume responsibility for loss, damage, or disclosure. It is strongly recommended that contestants keep the original copies of their scores and recordings.
